10 reasons I’m not ashamed to be a One Direction fan

One Direction are considered as ‘the biggest boyband in the world’ right now, so why are they not being given the musical recognition and respect they deserve? And why are their fans still considered to be hysterical pre-teen girls who wear their faces on every possible item of clothing and only love them for their looks and not the quality of their music? I want to get rid of the stigma associated with being a One Direction fan. Why should I be made to feel ashamed to love a band that has been such a big part of my life? Exactly, I shouldn’t. And here’s just a few reasons why I’ll never be ashamed to admit my love for them.

1. Memories
So many of my best memories were made because of One Direction. Cheesy, I know, but it’s true. I’ve been to all four of their tours and each time have had the time of my life and I was even lucky enough to go to two dates on their most recent On The Road Again tour, the first of which I got barrier and it was honestly the best night of my life! I have been to a LOT of concerts over the years, but there’s just something about One Direction concerts that make me feel like I’m on top of the world. Knowing everyone in that crowd loves this band as much as you do is a truly magical experience and makes it extra special, like it’s a massive family and you just feel so at home.

2. Friends
Again, it might sound cheesy but if it wasn’t for One Direction, I wouldn’t know so many amazing people. This is going to sound a bit silly if you’ve never experienced it, but twitter has brought me really close to a lot of fellow fans all around the world. I’ve even been lucky enough to meet a few of my online friends which made me really happy and was such lovely experience. It’s crazy how the love for a band can bring people who would never even have known each other together, and I’m truly grateful for that opportunity they’ve given me.

3. Happiness
Simple really, they make me smile. There have been times when I’ve been feeling a bit down or lonely and all I have to do is press play on one of their songs and instantly I feel happy and at home. They’ve been a constant in my life for the past five years and it’s comforting to know that wherever I go, they’ll always be there for me. Maybe not physically, but just listening to their music is enough to give me the feeling that I’m not alone.

4. They’re hardworking
The most amazing thing about One Direction is the fact that they didn’t even win The X Factor. It’s something most people forget, given their success, but they only came third. I know some people debate about gaining fame from The X Factor, but personally I think the contestants work as hard, if not even harder, than those who work their way into the music profession. It’s pretty amazing that One Direction didn’t even win and yet now they are the most successful boyband of this generation, and that’s got to say something about their hard work and determination.

5. They’re down to earth
Even though they’re the ‘biggest boyband in the world’, they don’t act like they’re superior to anyone, which I really admire a lot. They’ve somehow succeeded in remaining the normal boys they were before they got super famous, which is a major reason why I love and respect them so much. They’re polite, always so grateful for everything their fans do for them and you can tell that they love performing and making music for their fans, it’s really amazing to witness and something that I think a lot more people need to respect them for.

6. Charity work
Another thing they deserve much more respect and credit for is the amount of charity work they do. They support a charity called Rays of Sunshine, which grants wishes to seriously ill children between ages 3 – 18 years old, they visit sick fans frequently and Louis holds a lot of charity events to help these children’s’ wishes come true. I really don’t understand why they constantly aren’t given the credit they deserve for all the charity work they do, because it truly is inspiring and deserves to be recognised.

7. They kept going after losing a member
Again, I don’t think many people have given them enough credit for this. The departure of Zayn from the band hit everyone hard, me included, I’m not going to lie a lot of tears were shed on my part! But what I think is truly amazing is that he left two months into a world tour, and they just kept going. It would’ve been so easy for them to cancel the rest of the tour, but they carried on and let me tell you they were bigger and better than ever somehow. Just three days after Zayn left, they were on that stage doing the next concert of the tour. I seriously think that’s something to be admired by everyone, fan or not.

8. Music
Right, we need to get something straight here. If when someone says ‘One Direction’, you think ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, please just stop right there. Please go and listen to their latest album and re-evaluate your opinion. Their music has grown so much since those days and if you still judge them based on those boppy pop songs you are missing out on some amazing music. Seriously. Their sound has matured and their latest album is the best yet, with beautiful lyrics, harmonies and strong voices. The best thing is that they wrote 90% of the album themselves, and you can really tell. There is no need for people to think of One Direction as a childish pop boyband anymore, because those days are long gone.

9. Growing up
I get a lot of people telling me that I’m ‘too old’ to like One Direction, and people have always made me feel like it’s a childish thing to love them so much. But who put an age limit on a band? That’s just stupid, if you ask me. I can’t help that I was 15, almost 16, when I saw them on X Factor and I’ve loved them ever since. I’ve literally grown up with this band, through the last five years I’ve had the privilege of watching them grow up while I also grew with them. Just because I’m older than the average fan doesn’t mean I should love them any less or feel ashamed of it. I’m not just going to wake up one day and think ‘actually, I’m too old for this’, or suddenly stop liking them just because of my age. For me there’s no shame in being 21 and being a One Direction fan, it’s my choice and it makes me happy so why should there be?

10. They’re just themselves
No matter how many exaggerated, untrue media stories and abuse people throw at them, they never ever change who they are. They’re lovely to every fan they meet, they’re never rude to those who insult them, and they basically just put up with a lot of negative media which I think is truly admirable, whether you’re a fan or not. Even when people say rude things about them or their music, they just keep doing what they love and ignore the haters. People are always going to say things against you, but you just have to realise that their words don’t mean anything as long as you’re happy what you’re doing. And that’s what I think is special about these boys; they simply love what they do. When you watch them on stage it’s clear that all they want to do is make people happy and give the fans the best experience of their lives, and they always succeed. That’s why this most recent album is so special, it came from their hearts just for the fans and you can tell. They’re just their happy, at times silly, entertaining and endearing selves.

So the purpose of this post wasn’t to convert you into a One Direction fan if you’re not one, but simply to state that I’m not, and will never be, ashamed to be their fan. I’ve been told that ‘one day you’ll regret loving One Direction so much’, but I could never think of a statement more untrue. In fact, I think the exact opposite. One day I’m going to look back on all the amazing memories, friends, smiles, laughter and wonderful times I had because of my love for this band and think that loving them was the best decision I ever made. And that isn’t something I’ll ever be ashamed to admit.
